AHA Expresses Support for Lead-Safe Housing for Kids Act

The AHA today expressed support for the Lead-Safe Housing for Kids Act of 2017 (S. 1845). 鈥淟ead exposure in infants and young children is devastating to brain development and can result in permanent brain damage,鈥 AHA said in a letter to the bill鈥檚 sponsors, Sens. Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Tim Scott (R-SC). 鈥淲hile important progress in reducing lead exposure has been made, the risk continues, particularly in older housing and communities. The most critical step in preventing lead exposure is identifying which homes and communities have lead, and removing lead before children are exposed. The Lead-Safe Housing Act for Kids Act of 2017 does exactly that, with a focus on low-income housing. Your legislation would prevent lead exposure and result in healthier children and communities.鈥
