Partnership issues recommendations to prevent, better manage chronic disease
The nation cannot lower health care costs without addressing chronic disease, according to a released today by the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease. About half of adults aged 45 to 64 have more than one chronic condition, the paper notes. “Compared to a person without any chronic conditions, spending is almost 2.5 times more for those with one chronic condition; six times more for people with three chronic conditions; and 13.5 times more for people with five or more chronic conditions,” the partnership adds. To reduce health care costs and the economic losses from poor health, the report recommends the nation prioritize prevention and management of chronic conditions; encourage continued innovation in health care treatment and delivery; improve access to recommended care; promote health across generations; and replicate those programs that are working to promote wellness and manage disease.
