The nation has made significant progress toward transforming nursing roles, responsibilities and education to meet the promise of a reformed health care system and the nation's health needs, according to a  released today by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. The report assesses progress since the Institute of Medicine’s 2010  on the future of nursing and identifies areas that should be emphasized over the next five years, including efforts to remove scope-of-practice barriers, strengthen pathways to higher education, increase workforce diversity and improve the collection of workforce-related data. The AHA’s American Organization of Nurse Executives subsidiary “is a committed partner in the effort to achieve the IOM committee’s recommendations,” said AONE President Linda Burnes Bolton, chief nurse executive for Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. “AONE supports academic progression and efforts to improve interprofessional collaboration. Through AHA’s clinical leadership committee, AONE and AHA’s Physician Leadership Forum work collaboratively to provide clinical input to transform the health care delivery system and ensure quality patient care.”
