President to nominate Slavitt for CMS administrator
President Obama yesterday his intent to nominate Andy Slavitt for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administrator. Currently CMS’s principal deputy administrator, Slavitt has served as acting administrator since Marilyn Tavenner stepped down in March. AHA President and CEO Rich Umbdenstock applauded the announcement, saying Slavitt “has a deep understanding of the U.S. health care system and a commitment to improving patient care. We believe Andy’s proven leadership in the public and private sectors speaks to the ongoing contributions he will make at CMS.” Obama also announced his intent to nominate Mary Wakefield for deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Administrator of HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration, Wakefield has served as acting deputy HHS secretary since April. Both nominations require Senate confirmation.
