Few U.S. adults eat enough fruits and vegetables
Only 9% of U.S. adults consumed the recommended daily amount of vegetables and 13% the recommended amount of fruit in 2013, according to a released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Results varied widely by state, with Californians having the highest intake for both at 13% and 18%, respectively. According to U.S. dietary guidelines, adults should eat one and a half to two cups of fruit and two to three cups of vegetables daily, which may reduce the risk for heart disease, stroke and certain cancers. “Substantial new efforts are needed to build consumer demand for fruits and vegetables through competitive pricing, placement and promotion in child care, schools, grocery stores, communities and worksites,” the report states.
