Cultivating Physician Engagement During the Pandemic

<p>Covid-19 created emergency conditions for healthcare systems across the country- with levels of severity never before seen by physicians and healthcare administrators. During this time of crisis, system goals that we鈥檙e once unanimously considered to be top-priority by executives took a back seat to establishing emergency protocols and preserving the lives of patients and medical staff. Our presentation follows the journey of Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS), which saw opportunity during crisis to invest in leadership development and the well-being of physicians through their Applied Physician Leadership Academy (APLA). This 6-month program, collaboratively designed with The Leadership Development Group, paved the way for forward progress on previously dormant mission-critical strategic imperatives while also empowering and engaging physicians as leaders amidst a pandemic backdrop. Learn directly from program designers and participants about key design criteria, leadership competencies, and break through moments that led to program success.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hospitals and health systems and physician groups increasingly have hired physicians and acquired practices critical to their core operations. Recently, nontraditional players like health plans, large employers, private-equity and venture-capital firms have been acquiring and investing in physician practices. These players understand the central role physicians play in directing large portions of health care dollars and believe that tighter management, technology, data analytics tools and practice innovation can result in better care, better outcomes, better care experience and profitability.</p>
<p>While these physician-practice acquisition trends vary by market, they do not appear to be slowing and, in fact, have been accelerating significantly over the last three years. Consequently, they potentially present both a threat and an opportunity for hospitals and health systems that should be considered.</p>

<p>Statistics on physician suicide and burnout served as the impetus for ChristianaCare in Newark, Del., to create the <a href="https://christianacare.org/forhealthprofessionals/providerwellbeing/">Center for WorkLife Wellbeing</a>, which builds support systems to enable physicians to reconnect with the joy and meaning in medicine. The Center鈥檚 work is not just about minimizing stress, but also creating the conditions where clinicians can thrive.</p>
