Despite growing recognition of the importance of communication, gaps remain in current communication skills among both trainees and practicing clinicians. Join AHA for this session to learn how to communicate serious news to patients and families in patient-centered fashion using the SPIKES framework and how to empathically respond to emotions using the NURSE mnemonic to improve this experience for both patients and providers.

This session will be led by Julia Vermylen, M.D, MPH, a practicing palliative care physician and medical educator focused on teaching serious illness communication techniques at Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Mon, 21 Mar 2022 08:18:07 -0500 Physician Alliance: Care Well Patient and Family Advisory Councils: Resources for the Field /patient-and-family-advisory-councils-podcasts-and-blueprint
Patient and Family Advisory councils (PFACs) are an excellent way to help health care institutions and providers better understand the perspective of patients and families while also helping caregivers better identify the needs of their patient population and bring patient and clinicians views closer together. As COVID-19 divided and devastated communities, many organizations worked with their PFACs to inform outreach, reduce barriers caused by COVID-19 and drive lasting improvements. Address and Treat Opioid Use Disorder as Part of Usual Hospital Care Dec 13 /education-events/you-can-do-address-and-treat-opioid-use-disorder-part-usual-car
The opioid crisis continues to be a public health emergency. Patients with untreated Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) have high rates of acute health care utilization, and hospitals take on a significant amount of the financial burden. Hospitals are critical access points and hospitalization is an ideal opportunity to offer patients with OUD access to humanistic and evidence-based treatment. Patients receiving buprenorphine therapy are over 50% less likely to be readmitted within 30 days, and over 40% less likely to be readmitted within 90 days compared to those not receiving buprenorphine therapy. Our panel of national experts will explore avenues hospital institutions can travel to implement programs and processes to address OUD. You can do this!
Wed, 10 Nov 2021 16:19:43 -0600 Physician Alliance: Care Well Integrating Patient Safety and Clinician Well-Being: New Leadership Tools to Reduce Burnout and Latent Error Apr. 15 /education-events/integrating-patient-safety-and-clinician-wellbeing-new-leadership-tools-reduce
In the dynamic and stressful environment of health care, leadership training hasn’t always incorporated rapid technology advancement and how to lead teams through those changes. Understanding the lag of human adaptation behind technological advances can be key in adoption and learning. Understanding of basic human factors can help leaders and clinical teams connect and advance together. During this webinar you will hear about a framework to build on traditional safety models integrated with consideration for human factors affecting outcomes.

Featuring speakers Michael R. It is a complex network, so providing consistent care in the face of the novel Coronavirus-19 posed a challenge. Atrium Health’s Central Market, located in the greater Charlotte area of North Carolina, watched as hospitals and ICUs around the country filled to capacity and strove to find an innovative way to treat the COVID-19 patients in their community. In April, they launched a two-unit virtual hospital, which freed up hospital beds for the most complex patients and allowed for some acute COVID-19 patients to recover in their homes, thus limiting community spread and stretching their capacity.

Listen to the podcast
Wed, 12 Aug 2020 09:52:53 -0500 Physician Alliance: Care Well Stigma Kills - Addressing Opioid Use Disorder By Changing Culture /education-events/stigma-kills-addressing-opioid-use-disorder-changing-culture
A survey by the American Psychiatric Association indicated that 1/3 of those surveyed knew someone with an opioid use disorder (OUD).
